Italian boxer Angela Carini has explained why she decided to end her match early against Imane Khelif.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, on August 1, Carini faced off against the Algerian boxer, but ended the fight just 46 seconds into the match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The match was scheduled to last four rounds, but Carini felt she couldn\u2019t continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 25-year-old welterweight\u2019s headgear became dislodged twice within the brief time she was in the ring against Khelif.<\/p>\n\n\n

Reflecting on her surprising decision to end the fight so abruptly, Carini has now shared her thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to the press after the fight, Carini explained, \u201cI couldn\u2019t continue this time; I just didn\u2019t have any fight left in me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI ended the match because, after the second blow, I felt a strong pain in my nose. With years of experience in the ring and a life of fighting, I knew something was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u201cI said \u2018that\u2019s enough\u2019 because I knew I couldn\u2019t finish the match. So I thought it might be better to stop it myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s believed that Carini may have sustained a broken nose during the fight, but this has yet to be confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n

There was already controversy surrounding the boxing match between Carini and Khelif due to Khelif\u2019s disqualification from last year\u2019s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She failed an unspecified gender eligibility test due to what the International Boxing Association cited as elevated levels of testosterone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khelif failed because the IBA\u2019s eligibility rules prevent athletes with XY chromosomes from competing in women\u2019s events, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has come under scrutiny for allowing Khelif to participate in the Games despite her previous failure to pass the required health tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Taiwan\u2019s Lin Yu-ting has also been a subject of discussion. Similar to Khelif, Lin was disqualified from last year\u2019s World Championships for not meeting gender eligibility criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n

Caitlin Parker, captain of the Australian boxing team for Paris 2024, has labeled the participation of athletes like Khelif and Yu-ting as \u2018dangerous.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t agree with it,\u201d she said, according to The Telegraph. \u201cI really hope the organizations get their act together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the backlash, Mark Adams, the IOC spokesperson, believes the committee made the right decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese boxers are entirely eligible\u2014they are women according to their passports,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
