Credit: Alamy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The nurse says that settling multiple alarms in the morning can disrupt your rapid eye movement (REM) sleep cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/247927#what-is-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Medical News Today<\/a>, REM is when your brain and body experiences several changes, such as rapid eye movement, increased heart rate, and blood pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can lead to numerous negative effects, including sleep inertia (the disoriented feeling when waking up), increased drowsiness throughout the day, persistent fatigue, mood swings, and elevated cortisol levels, which&nbsp;is \u2018your body\u2019s main stress hormone,\u2019 per&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/what-is-cortisol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WebMD<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each time an alarm goes off, it triggers a \u2018fight or flight\u2019 response in our bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This sudden surge of adrenaline is stressful, and when repeated multiple times each morning, it can have long-term consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bruss says it can contribute to long-term stress, depression, cardiovascular problems, and even weight gain \u2013 yep, repeated alarm-induced stress can also affect our waistlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the nurse isn\u2019t the only expert issuing a warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twistkoala.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Screenshot-2024-08-12-at-16.15.12.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10274\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Setting multiple alarms to wake you up in the morning can result in sleep fragmentation. Credit: @jordan.bruss\/TikTok<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sleep coach Beatrix Schmidt says she used to set two to three alarms when she struggled with long-term insomnia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s observed various iterations of this behavior in clients, with one extreme case involving the person setting \u2018over 20 alarms, each five minutes apart.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary issue with multiple alarms is sleep fragmentation during the final hours of rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sleep fragmentation is repeated, short sleep interruptions that lead to excessive tiredness throughout the day, per&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eightsleep.com\/blog\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-sleep-fragmentation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eight Sleep<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving this fragmentation at the end can really affect how energized you feel in the morning,\u201d Schmidt&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beatrixaschmidt.com\/blog\/why-setting-multiple-alarms-is-bad-for-your-sleep-especially-when-treating-chronic-insomnia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sleeping coach describes a typical scenario: you might wake up to the first alarm, hit snooze, and drift off again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second alarm might prompt you to turn on the lights before dozing off a second time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the third or last alarm gets you out of bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what\u2019s the solution?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twistkoala.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Alarm-clock-1-scaled-1-1160x1699.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10275\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Experts are advising people to find healthier ways to ensure they get up in the morning.
