Kelly Clarkson has sparked outrage after admitting to spanking her children if they misbehave.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clarkson, 42, is an American singer-songwriter known for tracks such as \u2018Because Of You\u2019 and \u2018Since U Been Gone.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s estimated to have sold over 25 million albums and 45 million singles worldwide and has been dubbed \u2018one of pop music\u2019s greatest singers\u2019 by\u00a0Billboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But now, Clarkson faces major backlash over her controversial parenting admissions.<\/p>\n\n\n

After the pop star said she\u2019s \u2018not above spanking\u2019 her children, people took to X, formerly\u00a0Twitter<\/a>, and shared their outrage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

One person said: \u201cKelly Clarkson should\u2019ve been canceled when she proudly admitted that she spanks her kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI for one deleted all her music from my library when she said that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another added: \u201cI was spanked as a kid and it was traumatizing. I don\u2019t even remember what I did wrong I only remember being terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t hit someone and then teach them that hitting you is wrong,\u201d argued a third.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somebody else wrote: \u201cI can\u2019t imagine hitting my kid, no matter how frustrating he\u2019s being. Kids don\u2019t have the reasoning and emotional regulation skills adults do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others defended Clarkson, with one fan commenting: \u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with that! It\u2019s a way of giving discipline to kids in my culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agreeing, a second said: \u201cAll I can say is I stole candy when I was a kid, got spanked, and then never did it again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

The \u2018Stronger\u2019 singer, who shot to fame after winning the first-ever American Idol<\/em>, shares two children with talent manager Brandon Blackstock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

They welcomed daughter River Rose in 2014 and son Remington \u2018Remy\u2019 Alexander in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pair met in 2006 and began dating in 2012, leading to their engagement later that year and marriage in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After nearly seven years of marriage, the couple filed for divorce in June 2020, citing \u2018irreconcilable differences.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their divorce involved a prolonged legal battle over spousal support, child custody, Clarkson\u2019s Montana ranch, and more, per Us Weekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Their divorce was finalized in 2022 and they came to a settlement that Clarkson would pay Blackstock a one-time payment of $1,326,161, as well as $115,000 monthly until January 31, 2024, and $45,601 per month in child support, reports Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

It was agreed the pair would share joint custody of their kids, with Clarkson having primary custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of this year, the pop star has reached a confidential settlement in her battle with Blackstock over the millions in commission he paid himself as her manager, according to Rolling Stone<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the challenges of the split, Clarkson has remained focused on her career and children and often opens up about being a parent.<\/p>\n\n\n

In a 2016 interview with Redbook<\/a>, she said: \u201cI have a lot of mom guilt. I was just talking about this\u2026 If you\u2019re a mom, you want to be with your kid every day. You don\u2019t want to miss a moment, you want her to need you and want you and not want somebody else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not gonna BS you, that\u2019s hard. There are days where I cry like and I\u2019m like, \u2018I don\u2019t know if I can handle all this!\u2019 or get it all done. But at the end of the day, 99 percent of the time, it\u2019s awesome and it\u2019s worth it and that\u2019s what I say to myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it\u2019s other parenting comments that have landed Clarkson in hot water with fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Atlanta radio station 94.1<\/a> in 2018, the \u2018A Moment Like This\u2019 singer shared (via FM104<\/a>): \u201cI\u2019m not above a spanking, which people aren\u2019t necessarily into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t mean hitting her hard. I just mean a spanking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clarkson added that her parental discipline approach stems from her childhood experiences, adding that she\u2019s done \u2018fine in life.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n

She continued: \u201cMy parents spanked me, and I did fine in life, and I feel fine about it, and I do that as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a tricky thing, when you\u2019re out in public, because then people are like, they think that\u2019s wrong or something, but I find nothing wrong with a spanking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On disciplining her daughter by spanking, she added: \u201cI warn her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Hi, I\u2019m going to spank you on your bottom if you don\u2019t stop right now, this is ridiculous,\u2019 and honestly it\u2019s really helped. She doesn\u2019t do that kind of stuff as often.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)<\/a> condemns using spanking when disciplining children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It reads: \u201cCorporal punishment \u2013 or the use of spanking as a disciplinary tool \u2013 increases aggression in young children in the long run and is ineffective in teaching a child responsibility and self-control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn fact, new evidence suggests that it may cause harm to the child by affecting normal brain development. Other methods that teach children right from wrong are safer and more effective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also addresses the harm associated with verbal punishment, such as shaming or humiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
