A woman who goes by the username @stupidlittlegenius has gone viral<\/a> on TikTok<\/a> after unpacking the lyrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After finding out the true meaning behind the nursery rhyme, viewers took to the comments and reacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

One person wrote: \u201cMy childhood is officially ruined.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy did my two-year-old self have to sing these nursery rhymes?\u201d another questioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone else said: \u201cI\u2019m going to pretend this is about the weather.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

In the viral video, @stupidlittlegenius begins: \u201cEveryone knows this one, but do you know what it means?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She then sings the familiar tune: \u201cIt\u2019s raining, it\u2019s pouring, the old man is snoring, he went to bed and bumped his head and couldn\u2019t get up in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The TikToker says although the nursery rhyme doesn\u2019t describe anyone in particular, it acts as a \u2018cautionary tale.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although it appears to be describing a downpour, the woman reveals that surprisingly, it has nothing to do with rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She continues: \u201cIn actual fact, the old man liked a good drink<\/a>, and \u2018it\u2019s raining and pouring\u2019 refers to the alcoholic drinks being poured very liberally \u2013 like it\u2019s raining cocktails and shots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The TikToker confirms that it actually is about a man who has had far too many to drink, adding: \u201cAfter drinking so much that he couldn\u2019t stay awake, he started nodding off and snoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo he decided \u2018It\u2019s time to sleep it off.\u2019 But by this point, he was so inebriated he probably couldn\u2019t even walk in a straight line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo when he went to bed he stumbled, fell or otherwise drunkenly bumped his head. And that must\u2019ve been some bump because he couldn\u2019t get up in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

While you\u2019d suspect the man couldn\u2019t get up due to a rough hangover, there\u2019s actually a much more depressing reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The TikToker concludes: \u201cWell, he was dead. That\u2019s right, most experts agree that the man never got up again because he suffered from a major head trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

And things get even darker if you delve further into the origins of this nursery rhyme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018It\u2019s Raining, It\u2019s Pouring\u2019 is listed as an example in Andrew Kaye\u2019s \u2018Essential Neurosurgery\u2019 medical book, per American Songwriter<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A section discusses a \u2018deteriorating conscious state,\u2019 adding: \u201cThis is the most important neurological sign, particularly when it develops after a \u2018lucid\u2019 interval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is essential that the drowsiness that occurs in a patient following head injury is not misinterpreted just as the patient wishing to sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the book, Kaye notes the seemingly innocent rhyme is actually a \u2018classic description of an extradural hematoma [acute hemorrhage] leading to drowsiness and death.’\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patient.info<\/a> explains that an extradural hematoma is \u2019caused by a severe head injury \u2013 for example, in a road traffic accident.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

These strange connections have led some to theorize that the song serves as a PSA to encourage those with head injuries to seek medical help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
