But did you know the character isn\u2019t an egg?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discussing this revelation on social media, one person writes: \u201cThis has been haunting me for years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>Another adds: \u201cOh my goodness, how did I not realize this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy mind has been blown,\u201d comments a third.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Somebody else says: \u201cThese are the kinds of things that keep me up at night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you closely examine the nursery rhyme\u2019s words, you realize there\u2019s no mention of Humpty being an egg.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/igvofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/EXTEGH-scaled.jpg?ezimgfmt=ng:webp\/ngcb1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The nursery rhyme never describes Humpty Dumpty as an egg. Credit: Alamy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s refresh our memories with the classic lines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,<\/em><br><em>Humpty Dumpty had a great fall,<\/em><br><em>All the king\u2019s horses and all the king\u2019s men,<\/em><br><em>Couldn\u2019t put Humpty together again.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>So, how did Humpty come to be known as an egg?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, the first appearance of an egg-shaped Humpty was in Lewis Carroll\u2019s \u2018Through the Looking Glass.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, the egg characterization has stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this leads to another question, what was Humpty before he was known as an egg?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/igvofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2A1HRM2-scaled.jpg?ezimgfmt=ng:webp\/ngcb1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Humpty Dumpty was first characterized as an egg in Lewis Carroll\u2019s \u2018Through the Looking Glass.\u2019 Credit: Alamy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s been proposed that the nursery rhyme tells the story of King Richard III and his defeat at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, reports the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/weird-news\/people-just-discovering-humpty-dumpty-30669992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/humpty-dumpty-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">History Defined<\/a>&nbsp;elaborates on this, explaining that the king was recorded to have fallen, with his soldiers and men being unable to win the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>But this isn\u2019t the only theory about Humpty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several war historians say that Humpty Dumpty was not an egg, nor a man, but a canon!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When author Holly Bourne took to X (formerly\u00a0Twitter) and began asking for further information, Jane Etheridge, Vice Chair of the Federation of Children\u2019s Book Groups,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/janesetheridge\/status\/1612554211979415552\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">responded<\/a>: \u201cIt\u2019s believed to be Roundhead propaganda about a Royalist cannon.
