Credit: Alamy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The internet is a goldmine for this sort of little-known but oddly fascinating information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether it\u2019s how the\u00a0fourth side of a cheese grater\u00a0is actually supposed to be used, what the\u00a0initials of M&amp;Ms\u00a0stand for, or the secret\u00a0purposes of the\u00a0hooks on shopping carts, you learn something new every day when you spend a lot of time online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>But now, it\u2019s a revelation about toilets that has the internet feeling baffled\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One writes: \u201cI\u2019m glad someone asked because I\u2019ve been wondering this for years but never googled it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another adds: \u201cCan\u2019t believe I\u2019ve been living with a WC sign and had no idea why it was called WC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was 23 y\/o when I learned,\u201d somebody else comments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fourth says: \u201cI know, but don\u2019t use it (don\u2019t use the word \u2013 do use the WC).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others, though, have been left stunned that people have gone throughout their lives without knowing what \u2018WC\u2019 stands for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A second person questions: \u201cWhat?! You had to carry water in with a bucket, heat it up, pour it in the tub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIndoor plumbing comes along and there is already a room with a bath, the bathroom, so where do you put the toilet? Just put it in a closet, it\u2019s the easiest place to put a toilet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to being one of the only places in the home with running water inside, they later became known as water closets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo start, WC is an abbreviation standing for \u2018water closet\u2019, a name used in the 1900s for a toilet, due to most being fitted in a spare closet or cupboard.
