Jennifer Anisto<\/a>n<\/a>\u00a0has sparked a huge debate after claiming\u00a0Friends<\/em>\u00a0is now offensive to a \u2018whole generation.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aniston starred in Friends<\/em> <\/em>as Rachel Green for 10 seasons between 1994 and 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was one of the biggest sitcoms ever <\/em>and still has major rewatch potential to this day. However, some of the jokes on the TV<\/a> show have not aged so well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So much so that Aniston has claimed Gen Z finds Friends <\/em>\u2018offensive.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But not everyone agrees, and the Murder Mystery<\/em> star\u2019s comments have sparked a pushback online.<\/p>\n\n\n

It does seem that Aniston\u2019s claims have some merit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problematic aspects of the show have been well-documented, with the treatment of Chandler\u2019s transgender father, comments about lesbian couple Carol and Susan, and the general lack of diversity attracting particular criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Ross\u2019 treatment of women has also been questioned by Gen Zers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can fully see Ross hurting one of the women in his life and not feeling remorse,\u201d one\u00a0TikTok<\/a>\u00a0user says in a\u00a0video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHear me out\u2026 it\u2019s because the show has aged terribly and is not funny to a new generation of kids,\u201d a\u00a0Redditor\u00a0agrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, in fact, Buzzfeed<\/a> has created an entire list of all of the issues with the classic sitcom.<\/p>\n\n\n

However, others pointed out that although young people criticize Friends<\/em>, they still love it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One person has taken to X, formerly known as\u00a0Twitter<\/a>, to write: \u201cI love\u00a0Friends<\/em>\u00a0and still watch it constantly. But I\u2019m also aware there are some things that wouldn\u2019t be said today or storylines that wouldn\u2019t be done because, with time, more awareness and education about some issues have become more widespread. Both things can be true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Another adds: \u201cCelebrities\u00a0of all kinds need to stop pretending that a small group of people being mad at them on Twitter for brief periods of time is some kind of systemic disadvantage that prevents them from doing what they want. They earn tens of millions every year in\u00a0Friends<\/em>\u00a0residuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGen Z-ers LOVE Friends<\/em> and keep its valuation at hundreds of millions of dollars. It\u2019s one of the most popular and beloved shows of all time. There ARE legitimate criticisms of the show but they\u2019re not even making noise in the face of how beloved it is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Aniston tells AFP<\/a> that \u2018comedy has evolved\u2019 and this makes it more difficult to be funny nowadays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow it\u2019s a little tricky because you have to be very careful, which makes it really hard for comedians, because the beauty of comedy is that we make fun of ourselves, make fun of life,\u201d Aniston says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u201c[In the past] you could joke about a bigot and have a laugh \u2013 that was hysterical. And it was about educating people on how ridiculous people were. And now we\u2019re not allowed to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The We\u2019re The Millers<\/em> actress continues: \u201cThere\u2019s a whole generation of people, kids, who are now going back to episodes of Friends<\/em> and find them offensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere were things that were never intentional and others\u2026 well, we should have thought it through \u2013 but I don\u2019t think there was a sensitivity like there is now\u2026 Everyone is far too divided.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
