{"id":10497,"date":"2024-09-02T13:06:59","date_gmt":"2024-09-02T13:06:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/twistkoala.com\/?p=10497"},"modified":"2024-09-13T13:10:52","modified_gmt":"2024-09-13T13:10:52","slug":"teens-call-american-pie-deeply-problematic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devserver.pw\/twistkoala.com\/teens-call-american-pie-deeply-problematic\/","title":{"rendered":"Teens Brand American Pie \u2018Deeply Problematic\u2019 After Watching It For The First Time"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Gen Z is watching\u00a0<em>American<\/em><\/strong><em><strong>\u00a0Pie\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong>for the first time, and having major problems with the\u00a0movie.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hit comedy film was released in 1999 and had four successful sequels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a franchise,&nbsp;<em>American Pie<\/em>&nbsp;grossed a total of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-numbers.com\/movies\/franchise\/American-Pie#tab=summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$990 million worldwide<\/a>&nbsp;on a combined budget of $147 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cult series is known for its crude, raunchy comedy \u2013 but it seems teenagers don\u2019t think it would work today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People have been sharing their scorn for Gen Z\u2019s objections, with one penning: \u201cThat\u2019s funny. I find \u2018woke teens\u2019 extremely problematic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another writes: \u201cIf I don\u2019t like something on TV or a movie I just don\u2019t watch it because there are probably millions of other people who enjoy it so get over it get a life and grow up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWho cares about their poor soft sensitive feelings!!! Credit: Universal Pictures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time the poorly aged aspects of the movie franchise have hit the headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shannon Elizabeth, who played exchange student Nadia in the film, made reference to a specific scene while talking to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2019\/07\/09\/shannon-elizabeth-reflects-on-life-changing-american-pie-role-20-years-later\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Page Six<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>The scene involves her character unknowingly being watched by Jim (Jason Biggs), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), and Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) as she is getting undressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately for Nadia, the video is then accidentally broadcast to her entire school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the video is shared, Nadia is sent home to the Czech Republic, while the boys who were filming her receive no punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discussing the scene, the actress says: \u201cIf this had come out after the #MeToo movement, there would definitely be a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that it would have gone down differently.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also explains that the scene was awkward for her as she was still new to the film industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elizabeth recalls: \u201cIt was a closed set and it was just me in this room and the boom guy above me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the main thing I remember, just me and the boom guy, and trying to make jokes with the directors and make light of it because if I wasn\u2019t nervous maybe they wouldn\u2019t be so nervous\u2026 I just tried to make it no big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twistkoala.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/image-w1280-1160x653.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10501\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This isn\u2019t the first time the poorly aged aspects of American Pie have hit the headlines. Credit: Universal Pictures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Elizabeth is not the only actor from&nbsp;<em>American Pie&nbsp;<\/em>to claim that the movie would struggle to be made if it came out today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seann William Scott, who played the iconic character Stifler in the series, said the jokes from that film could get you \u2018arrested\u2019 and \u2018sent to jail.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8dlbH-6fZ6M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Jake\u2019s Takes<\/em><\/a>, he explains: \u201cYou know, I was having a conversation with a friend the other day, I was like, \u2018You could never make&nbsp;<em>American Pie<\/em>&nbsp;these days.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He continues: \u201cSome of the stuff in that movie, you would get arrested and probably go to jail for a long time if you did it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of the broader comedies, a lot of the stuff that gave me a career, I don\u2019t see there ever being an appetite for those sort of movies again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI mean, I could be wrong. It feels like people, myself included, appreciate more of a witty, smart humor and good writing as opposed to just something kind of over-the-top.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it seems as though the youth of today agree with these&nbsp;<em>American Pie&nbsp;<\/em>stars.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twistkoala.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/seann-william-scott-as-stiffler-in-american-pie-1160x580.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10502\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Seann William Scott, who played the iconic character Stifler in the series, said the jokes from that film could get you \u2018arrested\u2019 and \u2018sent to jail.\u2019 Credit: Universal Pictures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In March 2020,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/american-pie-clueless-best-teen-movies-reviewed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vice<\/a>&nbsp;conducted an experiment to gauge Gen Z teenagers\u2019 opinions on nostalgic movies, including<em>&nbsp;American Pie<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The responses from the participants aged between 16 and 19 revealed a generational divide in perceptions of the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>Taylor, 16, expressed skepticism about the film\u2019s portrayal of relationships: \u201cI don\u2019t know if that was realistic when the film came out, but I think men treat women with a lot more respect and equality now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olivia, 18, offered a harsher critique, stating: \u201cIt\u2019s bordering on incel attitudes. I think if you were a teenage boy watching this you\u2019d basically feel entitled to behave however you wanted to towards women.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hannah, 17, pointed out a specific scene as problematic: \u201cThe part where Jim and the other male characters film the foreign exchange student in his room is deeply problematic. The film doesn\u2019t even question the morality of doing this, it makes it seem like a joke and that the dudes are all \u2018legends\u2019 for getting the plan to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a huge violation of privacy and definitely a s**ual l offense for Jim to film her, let alone to then share that with his friends.
