Credit: @ddlovato\/Instagram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The \u2018Heart Attack\u2019 singer took to\u00a0Instagram\u00a0in 2021 and revealed that she identifies as non-binary.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday is a day I\u2019m so happy to share more of my life with you all \u2013 I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they\/them moving forward,\u201d the pop star declared.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work. I\u2019m still learning and coming into myself, and I don\u2019t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>Lovato opened up to actress Jane Fonda on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SwATxmu-e1Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Fire Drill Friday<\/em><\/a>, discussing her upbringing and its effects on her gender identity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She told the star: \u201cGrowing up in Dallas, Texas, in the South, being Christian, there were a lot of norms that were already pushed on to me when it came to s**uality and gender.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m a very fluid person, I\u2019m a very free-spirited, open person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twistkoala.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-2024-09-08-at-23.22.55.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10770\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Demi Lovato said where she grew up was \u2018not very open.\u2019 Credit: Fire Drill Friday via YouTube<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The \u2018Sorry Not Sorry\u2019 artist described her early life as being \u2018very confusing,\u2019 with it being \u2018not very open\u2019 where she lived in the South.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, it appears as though Lovato is much more comfortable in opening up about her gender identity and s**uality nowadays \u2013 revealing during YouTube Pride that she was \u2018grateful\u2019 to her family members for \u2018using my pronouns.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>Lovato also shared with fans that the change had come as she was beginning to learn more about herself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with the music podcast&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=94tNeUQHC5I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Audacy Check-In<\/em><\/a>, the \u2018Cool for the Summer\u2019 singer explained: \u201cSince I\u2019ve learned about gender identity more and learning about being non-binary or gender non-conforming, I\u2019ve used this time to really explore what feels right to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd after a year and a half of exploration, I realized it was time to let the world know that it feels weird to me when I get called a \u2018she\u2019 or a \u2018her.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI understand that people might have a hard time adjusting to it because it is something new, but I want to encourage people to keep trying and that I understand that it\u2019s a process to get used to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lovato admitted that sometimes, she will even \u2018mess up\u2019 regarding pronouns.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twistkoala.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-2024-09-08-at-23.26.12.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10771\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Demi Lovato has taken the time to explore what feels right regarding her gender identity. Credit: @ddlovato\/Instagram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Elsewhere on the podcast, Lovato revealed that she had formed close friendships with people within the<a href=\"https:\/\/igvofficial.com\/taglgbtqi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;LGBTQIA+<\/a>&nbsp;community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI used to identify family as blood-related, and now my queer family has become more family than friends,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd I feel like I now have two families. I have my blood relatives and then I have my queer family, and that family to me is the chosen family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A year before coming out about her gender identity, Lovato\u2019s engagement to actor and singer Max Ehrich came to an end.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, the \u2018La La Land\u2019 singer told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamour.com\/story\/demi-lovato-march-cover-shoot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glamour<\/a>&nbsp;she believed that their breakup was a blessing in disguise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twistkoala.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-2024-09-08-at-23.25.48.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10772\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Demi Lovato said telling her truth was \u2018a relief.\u2019 Credit: @ddlovato\/Instagram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>She told the publication: \u201cWhen I started getting older, I started realizing how queer I really am. This past year I&nbsp;was engaged to a man, and when it didn\u2019t work, I was like, \u2018This is a huge sign.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought I was going to spend my life with someone. Now that I wasn\u2019t going to, I felt this sense of relief that I could live my truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>During an appearance at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2023-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">19th Represents Summit<\/a>, Lovato added: \u201cAnd when I said goodbye to that relationship, I also said goodbye to everything that was holding me back from being my most authentic self.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pop vocalist also told the outlet that at the time, she wasn\u2019t sure how her journey of gender exploration would evolve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere might be a time where I identify as trans. I don\u2019t know what this looks like for me. There might be a time where I identify as non-binary and gender-nonconforming my entire life,\u201d she explained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOr maybe there\u2019s a period of time when I get older that I identify as a woman, I don\u2019t know what that looks like, but for me, in this moment right now, this is how I identify.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twistkoala.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-2024-09-08-at-23.08.43.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10773\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Demi Lovato says she\u2019s beginning to feel \u2018more feminine.\u2019 Credit: @ddlovato\/Instagram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Yet over time, it appears Lovato has become more accepting of people using she\/her pronouns when referring to her.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018Skyscraper\u2019 artist appeared on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/5lxYLPOSibxUKYyDaQ7BD9?si=ac30ddd1e7874ebc&amp;nd=1&amp;dlsi=607b02b7738a464a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Sprout<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;Podcast<\/em>&nbsp;and explained: \u201cI\u2019ve actually adopted the pronouns of \u2018she\/her\u2019 again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEspecially last year, my energy was balanced in my masculine and feminine energy so that when I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said \u2018women\u2019 and \u2018men.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn\u2019t feel necessarily like a woman. I didn\u2019t feel like a man. I just felt like a human.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lovato added that she had also been \u2018feeling more feminine.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut I think what\u2019s important is, like, nobody\u2019s perfect,\u201d she concluded. Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning.
