His tag is \u201cLose weight today. The affordable way.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, the telehealth platform distorted by thousands of years&nbsp;Hims &amp; Hers began selling official and composite versions&nbsp;of these medications. Its marketing is more focused on health with messages such as:Mind and body on the same team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma Laing, a clinical professor and director of dietetics at the University of Georgia, said that despite their differences, these selling points are reminiscent of how diets have been marketed in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany of these marketing strategies are similar in that they appeal to the perceived value of thinness in the pursuit of health, happiness and quality of life,\u201d Laing told Quartz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h4600\">Diet culture 2.0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Adrienne Bitar, author of \u201cDiet and the Disease of Civilization\u201d and a lecturer at Cornell University, said companies that offer weight loss services target their messages depending on the demographic they are serving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, while looking at the website Hims &amp; Hers, which is aimed at a younger audience, Bitar said she was reminded of one of the first diet books ever published \u2013 William Banting\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Letter on Obesity&nbsp;<\/em>from 1964.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very compassionate. It\u2019s like \u2018Have you tried everything? Nothing works for you? Willpower is not the answer. We\u2019re here to support you on your weight loss journey,\u201d Bitar said. \u201cI think that\u2019s a demographic that\u2019s more receptive to that kind of language.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bitar added that the way diets and weight loss programs are advertised often \u201creflect the larger concerns of the time.\u201d For example, the detox diets that first appeared in the 1970s represented \u201ca real concern with the environment, environmental degradation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bitar is now seeing a shift in these programs emphasizing physical strength, wellness and mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s this kind of euphemism that being fit and muscular and strong means being empowered,\u201d Bitar said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h4601\">The emergence of risks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Laing admits that the increase in GLP-1 reflects how weight loss is more complex than willpower and actually depends on \u201cenvironmental, genetic and social influences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, she is concerned that companies may be overlooking the short-term and long-term risks of these drugs.
